How much of the Brazilian Amazon has been lost to deforestation in 2023?<\/h2><p>In April, 328.71 kilometres-squared of Amazonian <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2023//03//31//first-lung-this-rainforest-could-be-the-worlds-most-important-carbon-sink/">rainforest was lost in Brazil, according to Inpe. In the same month last year, over 1,026 sq km of forest was cleared - an area larger than Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>April 2022 was the worst on record for Amazon <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2023//01//03//swedens-lucrative-forestry-industry-comes-up-against-eu-climate-concerns/">deforestation, with destruction almost double that of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s figure is still significant as it is below the historical average of around 466 sq km for the month.<\/p>\n<p>Between January and April this year, 1,173 sq km of Brazilian <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2022//06//10//indigenous-groups-offered-mediation-in-french-supermarket-deforestation-dispute/">Amazon has been cleared. Financed by Norway and Germany, the fund was frozen in 2019 when Bolsonaro dissolved the committee that steered its projects. This month, the UK announced it would contribute almost \u20ac93 million to the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>A Bolsonaro measure that encouraged <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2023//01//23//brazil-president-lula-accuses-bolsonaro-of-genocide-after-gold-mining-causes-indigenous-de/">illegal mining<\/strong><\/a> on protected Indigenous lands has been revoked, and a military campaign has been launched to eject illegal miners. Some Indigenous territories have been demarcated.<\/p>\n<p>Yet several major infrastructure projects in the Amazon threaten to derail this progress.<\/p>\n<p>These include the major Ferrograo railway project to transport grains, and the restoration of an abandoned highway that runs through protected parts of the rainforest.<\/p>\n<p>The renewal of a licence for the huge Belo Monte hydroelectric dam and a potential licence for an <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2023//01//05//ecological-disaster-spanish-energy-giant-repsol-hit-with-further-55m-fine-for-oil-spill-in/">oil drilling<\/strong><\/a> project near the mouth of the Amazon River are also being considered by So, could Lula's foreign policy put him at odds with Europe, just months after taking office?\u00a0 \n\n\u201cLula won the election last year \u2026. [and] most people celebrated his victory,\u201d Christopher Sabatini, a senior research Fellow for Latin America at Chatham House, told Euronews.\u00a0\u201cThe international perception has since changed largely because Lula's now engaging in a very aggressive international campaign based on long-standing views of the world.\u00a0 \n\n\"And that view is primarily to try to create a multipolar world and have Brazil serve as a spokesperson, as a voice for the Global South, which includes China and Russia in many ways.\u201d \n\nLula's controversial comments \n\nLula sparked controversy in the West after suggesting that Ukraine\u2019s allies were prolonging the war because they are providing Kyiv with weapons and support. \n\n\"The United States needs to stop encouraging war and start talking about peace; the European Union needs to start talking about peace so that we can convince Putin and Zelenskyy that peace is in the interest of everyone and that war is only interesting, for now, to the two of them,\" Lula told reporters during a recent trip to China.\u00a0 \n\nThe White House immediately pushed back, saying Lula was \u201cparroting Russian and Chinese propaganda, without looking at the facts.\u201d \n\nBrazil\u2019s president has since condemned the violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity and maintained calls for peace negotiations.\u00a0 \n\nThis was not the first time that Lula defied the foreign policy consensus of his Western allies. In January, he said that Kyiv and Moscow are both to blame for Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\nHe has also refused to sign a United Nations declaration criticising Nicaragua\u2019s human rights abuses, allowed two Iranian warships to dock in his country's territory and has not sent weapons to Ukraine. \n\nLast week, he also called for BRICS nations \u2013 Brazil, Russia, India,\u00a0China, and South Africa - to replace the dollar with another currency for international trade. \n\nThese moves, according to Sabatini, could ruffle feathers and force the West to reevaluate Brazil's position: \"To\u00a0many people in Western Europe and in the US, who before thought that Lula's engagement with the Global South was rather a value-neutral, it now looks like it actually may be undermining some of the key values of the developed north.\"\u00a0 \n\nCan Brazil influence the war in Ukraine? \n\nAfter Lula's initial comments and his calls for peace negotiations, Kyiv invited the Brazilian president to come to Ukraine so that he could \"understand the real causes and essence of Russian aggression.\" \n\nOleg Nikolenko, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian foreign ministry also said that Lula's comments put \"the victim and the aggressor on the same scale.\" \n\nThis response, according to Fredrik Erixon, the director of the European Centre for International Political Economy, is one of the reasons why Brasilia doesn't have much power in the war in Ukraine, despite Lula's efforts to start peace talks.\u00a0 \n\n\"I think it's perfectly obvious to Europe that Ukraine doesn't believe in it. And Ukraine doesn't believe that Lula is going to be an honest broker who can establish some sort of an accord that can help to drive parties towards peace,\" he said. \n\n\"It's Ukraine who's going to negotiate this particular peace.\" \n\nSabatini also questioned whether Brazil had the influence to encourage peace talks. \"Brazil's sort of 'foreign policy DNA' very much believes in the importance of dialogue and that it can serve as a broker negotiator. \n\n\"But in terms of raw power, it really doesn't have much.\" \n\nMajor trade deal in the works \n\nBut it's not all bad news for Brazil's relations with the West. The European Union is reportedly in the final stages of securing its\u00a0Mercosur trade deal with Brazil and its neighbours,\u00a0Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.\u00a0 \n\nIf signed, the deal would give agriculture producers from the South American trade block better access to the European Union and in return it would give manufacturers in the EU more export opportunities. After China, the European Union is\u00a0Mercosur's largest trade partner.\u00a0 \n\nThe\u00a0Mercosur trade deal is also one of the reasons why it is unlikely, \u201cthat Europe is trying to devise a particular response to [Lula's foreign policy],\u201d according to Erixon. \n\nInitial negotiations for the deal began 23 years ago but it stalled because of concerns - which both the EU and Lula have taken steps to alleviate - about the survival of the Amazon rainforest.\u00a0 \n\n\"Europe really wants to get to a point where they can finalise both a trade agreement and the sort of broader economic partnership agreement with Mercosur,\"\u00a0 he said.\u00a0 \n\nAnd it is currently in a position to see it through. It also helps curb corruption , he says, because it\u2019s harder to buy off judges. \n\nHow are Rio samba schools ranked? \n\nThe samba schools ' 70-minute displays can cost 10 million reais (\u20ac1.8 milion). The school that scores lowest is relegated to the lower league. Returning to the elite echelon can take years. \n\nThe top six finishers get percentages of box office revenue. But only the champion school goes down in history and no one remembers the runner-up, says Jorge Perlingeiro, the president of the top league. \n\nHow are the parade scores announced? \n\nFor over three decades, Perlingeiro has been the voice of Carnival, announcing judges\u2019 scores one by one. Each bellow of \u201c10!\u201d - the top score - with his heavy Rio accent launched the schools\u2019 fanatics into ecstasy yesterday. Some lower scores elicited frustrated groans. More than half of Rio\u2019s televisions were tuned in, according to Ibope which monitors ratings. \n\nThe ceremony lasted about 90 minutes, with no less than 432 scores read aloud for 12 schools. The winning school , 'Imperatriz Leopoldinense', achieved 269.8 - two-tenths of a point shy of perfect . \n\nThe title ends the school\u2019s 22-year drought and cements its Carnival director\u2019s star power. At the Sambadrome, the school\u2019s drum leader crumpled and cried when the win was announced while a packed crowd at the school jumped for joy. \n\nCarnival judging has a patchy history \n\n\nIt has taken decades for carnival judging to become fair and balanced. \n\nIn 1974, samba school 'Mocidade' lost the title because one costume judge handed down an inexplicably low score of 4, Fabato says. \n\nIn 1986, Brazilian soccer legend Socr\u00e1tes was selected to judge drums. But he had zero expertise so he rated schools based solely on crowd reaction. Samba schools were furious. One school\u2019s president said Socr\u00e1tes was too drunk to judge and demanded that his scores be annulled. \n\n\u201cHe [Socr\u00e1tes] skipped down the stairs to the parade ground, stripped off his top and started dancing along in a pair of tight white shorts. Officials objected and he was reluctantly coaxed back to the judging station.\u201d \n\nIn 1988, the count sparked a vicious fight between rival schools and a 16-year-old girl was shot in the stomach, local newspapers reported. \n\nRio carnival judges are hard to please \n\nJudges must justify any less-than-perfect score with a handwritten explanation. One judge, evaluating costumes last year, docked one-tenth of a point from a school because \u201ca considerable quantity of paraders\u2019 hats were slipping or fallen,\u201d and she noted another school had promised to deliver \u201ca diversity of green tones,\u201d though only lime green prevailed. \n\nA harmony judge noted \u201coccasional loss of internal homogeneity\u201d and that \u201cthe neglect or weakening of some voices emptied the song of its sonic mass.\u201d \n\nOn a scorecard last year, one judge noted how hard it has become to find errors so just one-tenth of a point can clinch a victory. Indeed, this year\u2019s runner-up finished one-tenth behind. \n\nAttention to detail is everything \n\nIf a gap appears between sections of the parade, the school can lose points. In this year\u2019s parade, the lighthouse atop Unidos da Tijuca\u2019s float was knocked severely askew, which cost them. \n\nStarting last year, judges\u2019 justifications are posted online within 48 hours. And cameras inside judges' booths record what they can see, so schools can review footage and compare to the judges\u2019 notes for inconsistencies. If any are found, schools can petition for a judge\u2019s removal. \n\nWhat do carnival revellers make of it all? \n\nIn interviews with two dozen paraders on Monday night, about half said they think judges\u2019 determinations still reflect some undue influence. But most acknowledged scoring has improved with each passing year. \n\n\u201cThey are trying to organise, so the competition happens only on the avenue, but there\u2019s a lot still happening behind the scenes. But he had zero expertise so he rated schools based solely on <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2021//08//04//love-canals-beat-the-crowds-in-venice-with-these-european-alternatives/">crowd reaction. Samba schools were furious. One judge, evaluating costumes last year, docked one-tenth of a point from a school because \u201ca considerable quantity of paraders\u2019 hats were slipping or fallen,\u201d and she noted another school had promised to deliver \u201ca diversity of green tones,\u201d though only lime green prevailed.<\/p>\n<p>A harmony judge noted \u201coccasional loss of internal homogeneity\u201d and that \u201cthe neglect or weakening of some voices emptied the song of its sonic mass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On a scorecard last year, one judge noted how hard it has become to find errors so just one-tenth of a point can clinch a victory. In this year\u2019s parade, the <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2021//07//10//these-french-lighthouses-are-being-turned-into-holiday-accommodation-along-the-brittany-co/">lighthouse atop Unidos da Tijuca\u2019s float was knocked severely askew, which cost them.<\/p>\n<p>Starting last year, judges\u2019 justifications are posted online within 48 hours. And cameras inside judges&#039; booths record what they can see, so schools can review footage and compare to the judges\u2019 notes for inconsistencies. Every samba dancer knows that,\u201d Carol Tavares, 40, said on Monday before parading with Unidos da Tijuca. \u201cIt\u2019s on the path toward changing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perlingeiro noted an ineffable quality also factors into the judging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe category that doesn\u2019t exist, but exists in everyone\u2019s mind, is emotion. It happens when you see the crowd cheering, waving. The judge sees that and, in a certain way, is captivated, too,\u201d he said. \u201cThat has an influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of rival schools at the Sambadrome clapped appreciatively after Perlingeiro announced the winner. The president of Mangueira, Rio\u2019s most popular school and a fan favourite, finished fifth on Wednesday. She said she was happy with the judges\u2019 recognition of her school\u2019s hard work. Asked if their scores were fair, the president, Guanayra Firmino, demurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith their justifications, I\u2019ll do my analysis if it was fair or not. I can\u2019t say that yet,\u201d said
