meeting his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández. “We must not in the 21st century continue doing the same as what was done in the 20th century.”

Lula explained that the currency would initially be shared between Argentina and Brazil for trade and transactions between the two countries and later adopted by fellow Mercosur trade bloc members.

Details remained fuzzy a day after Lula and Fernández announced the outlines in a joint statement published on Sunday in the Argentine newspaper Perfil.

Speaking in Buenos Aires on Monday afternoon, Brazil’s Finance Minister Fernando Haddad clarified that the proposal would not entail the adoption of a sole currency to replace the Brazilian real and the Argentine peso.

Economists immediately questioned the logic of the plan between the South American neighbours. Economic conditions are deteriorating in Argentina, where nearly four in 10 people live in poverty. The nation has one of the world's highest inflation rates — 95% in 2022 — and its Peso has steadily depreciated for over a decade.

Its multiple foreign exchange rates include an illegal one, employed in backrooms by money-changers, a practice so entrenched that this so-called 'blue dollar' rate is published daily in newspapers.

Brazil, Latin America’s largest nation, sits in an objectively better place economically, but its inflation in 2022 exceeded the ceiling of the central bank's target range for a second straight year. And the Real has shed half its value against the dollar since 2014.

Both countries’ economic teams will present proposals for trade and bilateral transactions, with a currency created after “much debate and meetings,” Lula said.

Watch the video in player above.

A proposal floated by the leaders of Brazil and Argentina to launch a common currency is being met with deep scepticism by analysts, who say neither country is positioned to tackle such a complicated undertaking or instil confidence in the idea with global markets.

But Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva told reporters on Monday that a common currency would reduce a harmful dependence on the US dollar.

“I think this will happen with time, and it is necessary because there are countries that sometimes have difficulty acquiring dollars,” Lula said in Buenos Aires after meeting his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández.

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//2023//01//03//brazils-president-luiz-inacio-lula-da-silva-greets-world-leaders-on-first-day-in-office/">Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva greets world leaders on first day in office

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2023//01//23//brazil-president-lula-accuses-bolsonaro-of-genocide-after-gold-mining-causes-indigenous-de/">Brazil: President Lula accuses Bolsonaro of ‘genocide’ after gold mining causes Indigenous deaths

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//2023//01//03//brazils-president-lula-da-silva-pays-last-respects-to-football-legend-pele/">Brazil's President Lula da Silva pays last respects to football legend Pelé

Speaking in Buenos Aires on Monday afternoon, Brazil’s Finance Minister Fernando Haddad clarified that the proposal would not entail the adoption of a sole currency to replace the Brazilian real and the Argentine peso.

Economists immediately questioned the logic of the plan between the South American neighbours. a new mural capturing the moment Lionel Messi lifted the iconic trophy.

Artist Maximiliano Bagnasco has been putting the final touches to his artwork on a street corner in the capital's Palermo neighbourhood.

It shows an image that will be etched into Argentina's football history and millions more around the world.

Messi is in the center holding the trophy aloft while wearing the bisht, the black and gold tunic Qatari's leader placed over his shoulders as he prepared to pick up the Cup.

Behind Messi, raising his arms euphorically, is goalkeeper Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez, the hero of the penalty shootout against France in the final.

At their sides are the tops of the heads of Paulo Dybala and Rodrigo de Paul.

Destined to draw... on a wall

Bagnasco told The Associated Press he knew he wanted to paint a mural even before the final took place.

"Days before the game, I had been talking about getting a wall, and I had been preparing the materials. and streets across the country became places of celebration after an epic World Cup final in which the national team beat France on penalties.

It was the country’s third World Cup title, and the first since 1986.

“I’m very happy, we really deserved this. The team suffered quite a bit, but it recovered as time went on,” said Josefina Villalba, a 55-year-old nanny who joined hundreds of fans at one of the many public plazas where giant screens were set up to watch the long-awaited match.

Millions of Argentines cried, yelled and hugged as they followed the game, which was a roller coaster of emotions.

Throughout the match, many watching in a public square in Buenos Aires chanted the name of captain Lionel Messi, often considered the world's greatest footballer who had long talked about how he yearned for a World Cup victory.

“I feel an immense happiness in my heart because this is the first World Cup I truly enjoy,” Hector Quinteros, a 34-year-old security guard, said as his eyes welled up with tears. “This always happens. But that early happiness turned to anxiety as France caught up, ultimately leaving the score at 3-3 before Argentina beat France 4-2 on penalties.

For many, the agonizing feelings of the match made the victory all the sweeter.

“When you suffer over something so much, the satisfaction is greater,” Fabio Villani, a 45-year-old video editor said, noting he still couldn’t quite believe Argentina had won a World Cup title.

It also felt par for the course for Argentina, a country known for its seemingly endless economic crises.

“Suffering is something that is very Argentine,” said Maria Isabel Ayala, a 53-year-old hairdresser. “If we suffer, it’s because we truly feel it in our hearts.”

Many fans were quick to remember Argentina great Diego Maradona, who died two years ago, saying he had something to do with today's victory.

“Diego sees everything from heaven, he wouldn't have wanted Argentina to lose. The first cup without him and we won! Diego is always here, he's eternal,” said Javier López, 18, whose voice broke as he spoke of Maradona, who led the national team to what had been its last World Cup title in 1986.

“Diego is certainly smiling now,” Brazil soccer legend Pelé wrote on social media as he congratulated Argentina for the victory.

In Rosario, Messi’s hometown, a sea of people went out into the streets to celebrate that their local hero had finally won a World Cup title.

The national squad led by Messi has managed to unite Argentines with a sense of joy that isn't frequent in a country that has been stuck in economic doldrums for years, is suffering one of the world’s highest inflation rates and almost four in 10 live in poverty.

President Alberto Fernández joined in on the celebrations and thanked the national team for the victory.

There were also messages of congratulations from Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and President Gabriel Boric of Chile.

Argentines let loose on Sunday and streets across the country became places of celebration after an epic World Cup final in which the national team beat France on penalties.

It was the country’s third World Cup title, and the first since 1986.

“I’m very happy, we really deserved this. a record amount, is going on display for the first time in 25 years.

The work ‘Diego y yo’ (Diego and I), will be shown at a Buenos Aires museum, nearly a year after it went up for auction.

In 2021, ‘ Diego y yo ’ went for €30.8 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. It was bought by Eduardo F. Costantini, a renowned Argentinian collector committed to supporting Latin American art and founder of the Museum of Latin American Art (MALBA) in Buenos Aires.

Record-breaker painting

At over €30 million, it is the most valuable Latin American portrait of all time. The sale was for triple the next highest Kahlo piece and at €5 million more than the highest prior estimates .

The previous record for a Latin American artist had been set by Kahlo’s husband, Diego Rivera, with his 1931 painting ‘Los Rivales’, which sold for €9.76 million at auction in 2018.

Frida Kahlo's prior record was created in 2016 when ‘Two Nudes in the Forest’ sold for €6.8 million, also in New York.

Diego y yo will be displayed as the main attraction of the ‘Tercer Ojo’ (Third Eye) exhibition where Eduardo Costantini will present his private collection at MALBA.

Other artists' works on show in the exhibition are from the Cuban Wifredo Lam, the Mexicans Miguel Covarrubias and Rosa Rolanda, the Brazilian Vicente do Rego Monteiro.

The Malba exhibition features more than 240 works, many of which have not been seen in public for nearly 30 years. The last time Diego y yo was on public exhibition was in 1998.

But why is Diego y yo such a valuable and important painting?

For starters, it was the last self-portrait Kahlo completed before her death in 1954.

Finished in 1949, the painting features tears in her eyes and her husband, Diego Rivera, covering part of her head.

The tears in Kahlo’s eyes are thought to represent her emotions over Rivera’s closeness to Mexican actress María Félix at the time.

“For me, Frida is a unique artist. She has a dramatic life that she tells without shame, in a spontaneous and open way. I think that's precisely what people like about her,” Eduardo Costantini.

Two of Mexico’s most esteemed artists; they were known for their rocky relationship. The two wed in 1929. They divorced in 1940 but reconciled and remarried the same year.

While Rivera was known for his murals, Kahlo’s work often unflinchingly looked at her private life, giving insight into the relationship of two of Mexico’s most important artists.

A Frida Kahlo self-portrait, that sold for a record amount, is going on display for the first time in 25 years.

The work ‘Diego y yo’ (Diego and I), will be shown at a Buenos Aires museum, nearly a year after it went up for auction.

In 2021, ‘<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//culture//tag//frida-kahlo/">Diego y yo’ went for €30.8 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.
