Disease-carrying mosquitoes are spreading through Europe: How can we protect ourselves?<\/a> <\/li><li class=\"widget__related_listItem\"> <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//next//2023//04//19//powassan-virus-cases-are-rising-why-is-lyme-diseases-deadly-cousin-so-concerning/">Powassan virus cases are rising. Why is \u2018Lyme disease\u2019s deadly cousin\u2019 so concerning?<\/a> <\/li><\/ul>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are sterilised through ionising energy and those sterile males are freed into the fields and when they meet with a wild female, their offspring aren\u2019t viable,\u201d Marianela Garcia Alba, a biologist at CNEA, explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis way, by successive release of such males we\u2019ll be able to reduce the population of the vector mosquito,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>CNEA biologists are currently sterilising 10,000 males per week, a figure which they estimate could rise to 500,000.<\/p>\n<p>The team expects to release the first batch of sterilised male mosquitoes in November.<\/p>\n<p>Dengue is transmitted through the bites of aedes aegypti mosquitoes and causes symptoms including fever, eye, head, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For more on this story, watch the video in the media player above.<\/strong><\/p>\n","hashtag":null,"createdAt":1682341273,"publishedAt":1682417749,"updatedAt":1682418503,"expiresAt":0,"canonical":"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2023\/04\/25\/dengue-fever-outbreak-biologists-are-sterilising-virus-carrying-mosquitoes-with-nuclear-en","images":[{"url":"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/articles\/stories\/07\/55\/64\/98\/{{w}}x{{h}}_cmsv2_97f5daf8-cc74-5752-aa1f-9cb293a1487f-7556498.jpg","altText":"Image shows a mosquito. Buenos Aires had to be abandoned due to massive crowds.<\/p>\n<p>Many ecstatic fans cheered on their heroes along every metre of the planned 30km parade route from a Buenos Aires suburb to the center of the capital, but that made for interminably slow progress.<\/p>\n<p>The bus had crawled along for almost five hours as millions celebrated the team's thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over France in the World Cup final, before the decision was made to trade the bus for a helicopter.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the evening, groups of people clashed with riot police, after authorities moved to arrest
